انسان کيست؟ بعضي‌ها دارا بودن عواطف و احساسات قوي انسان را وجه تمايز او با موجودات ديگر مي‌دانند. مسلماً همگي ما با تجربه‌هايي نظير خشم، حسادت، طمع، نفرت، پوچي، آرمان‌گرايي، محبت و عشق کم و بيش آشنا بوده‌ايم. ادبيات به نويسنده امکان مي‌دهد تا چنين تجربه‌هايي را با خوانندگانش سهيم شود. ادبيات نه تنها با انتقال دادن تجربه انساني بلکه با فراهم آوردن موقعيتي که به خواننده اجازه مي‌دهد تا خودش شخصاً و به صورت تخيلي در آن تجربه خاص شرکت نمايد، سروکار دارد. ادبيات وسيله‌اي است که به خواننده امکان مي‌دهد تا زندگي کامل‌تر، عميق‌تر، غني‌تر و آگاهانه‌تري داشته باشد. ادبيات ما را با تجربياتي آشنا مي‌کند که خودمان شخصاً نداشته‌ايم. به علاوه ادبيات مي‌تواند تجربياتي که خودمان از زندگي داشته‌ايم را عميق‌تر و ژرف‌تر گرداند. ادبيات شامل مطالعات فلسفي، روان شناختي، بين فرهنگي و تاريخي نيز مي‌شود. اصطلاح "ادبيات انگليسي" به ادبياتي که به زبان انگليسي نوشته شده اشاره مي‌کند. بنابراين نه تنها آثار نويسندگان انگليسي بلکه آثار نويسندگان آمريکايي، استرليايي، زلاندنويي، و کشورهايي که سابقاً مستعمره انگليس بوده‌اند نيز جزء ادبيات انگليسي به حساب مي‌آيد.

The Situational and Verbal Irony of Collier’s “The Chaser”

Gender in Shakespear’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

     

  This thesis is an attempt to study one of the Shakespeare’s major plays: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, from a gender-study point of view. At first, it has been tried to give some information about the author, I mean William Shakespeare and his works and the whole study to help the reader to have a general overview of the thesis; then, in the statement of the problem, the study explains the whole idea of the work and next it tries to give definitions of gender and its differences with sex, then to make clear the significance of the theory.

- جان ميلتون(1674-1608) :

جان ميلتون روز نهم دسامبر سال 1608 در لندن ديده به جهان گشود. پدرش نيز كه جان ميلتون ناميده می شد به شغل نويسندگي روزگار
مي­گذرانيد اما به دليل گرويدن به دين پروتستان مورد خشم و غضب پدر كاتوليك خود بود و از ارث محروم شده بود. او مردي موفق، روشنفكر و بافرهنگ بود و در شغل نويسندگي در بنگاه­هاي مستقلات كار مي­كرد و عاشق موسيقي و ادبيات بود و فرزندش يعني جان ميلتون معروف را در تحصیل و گزینش حرفه ی شاعری آزاد گذاشته بود. میلتون در كودكي در مدرسه "سن پول" كه "جان دان" مدیر آن بود رفت ولي هرگز در مورد جان دان چيزي نگفته كه نشان دهنده­ ي پيروي از او باشد.

Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961)

 was an American writer and journalist. During his lifetime he had seven novels, six collections of short stories, and two works of non-fiction published, with a further three novels, four collections of short stories, and three non-fiction autobiographical works published after his death. Hemingway's distinctive writing style, characterized by economy and understatement, had an enormous influence on 20th-century fiction, as did his apparent life of adventure and the public image he cultivated. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and his career peaked in 1954 when he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Hemingway's protagonists are typically stoical men who exhibit an ideal described as "grace under pressure"; many of his works are considered classics of American literature.

What is Haiku?

Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain.

دوره های ادبی در ادبیات بریتانیا

آثار ادبی را بطور معمول با دو روش دسته بندی می کنند؛ یکی دسته بندی براساس ژانر یا گونه ادبی (داستان کوتاه، رمان، حماسه، کمدی، تراژدی،…) و دیگری طبقه بندی برپایه دوره های ادبی است. آثار ادبی خلق شده در هر دوره از دو نظر با یکدیگر شبیه اند:

آرایه های شعری

Simile، (تشبيه) : همسان انگاری يا مقايسه مستقيم و آشكار دو چيز را Simile می ناميم. در این آرایه ی ادبی، معمولا بطور مستقیم از ادات تشبیه (like, as,…) استفاده می شود:

قالب های شعری

•  Acrostic

قالبی شعری که در آن، نخستین حرف یا آخرین حرف مصراع ها واژه، عبارت، یا جمله ای کلیدی می سازند. جفری چاسر (شاعر ادبیات انگلیسی میانه) شعری 24 قطعه ای دارد که اگر اولین حرف نخستین واژه از هر استانزا (قطعه) را به یکدیگر متصل کنیم، الفبای انگلیسی (a,b,c,d,e,…) حاصل می شود.

آیا شعر انگلیسی وزن دارد؟

وزن شعر انگلیسی

وزن در شعر انگلیسی را با دو سنجه ارزیابی می کنند:

نخست ترتیب فشار (stress) در هر پایه است. پایه یا foot کوتاه ترین واحد وزنی در شعر انگلیسی است. برای مثال واژه ugly یک پایه با دو هجا است و ترتیب فشار روی آن بصورت (- +) است. واژه perform هم یک پایه با دو هجا و ترتیب فشاریِ برعکس (+ -) است. قالب های پایه ای در شعر انگلیسی بدین ترتیب است:

زندگی نامه جان دان

- جان دان (1631-1572)

جان دان در سال 1572 كه احساسات ضد كاتوليك تقربياً به اوج رسيده بود در خانواده­اي كاتوليك و مرفه چشم به جهان گشود. او در دانشگاههاي آكسفورد وكمبريج و"لينكلن اين" تحصيل كرد و آموزش  وكالت ديد اما به دليل كاتوليك بودنش هرگز درجه­اي به او ندادند و نتوانست وكالت كند. پس از اينكه درسن چهار سالگي پدرش را از دست داد، وارث ثروتي فراوان شد اما چون استعداد تجارت نداشت به تحصيل روي آورد
